Akira Kurosawa

Akira Kurosawa (1910–1993) made films that were enjoyed by audiences all around the world, even though he often employed experiments from avant-garde cinema and traditional Western or Japanese art (Noh or Kabuki theatre). His multi-genred repertoire (crime and gangster movies, samurai and historical movies, contemporary social dramas, Shakespeare’s adaptations set in medieval Japan) was inextricably intertwined with the motif of existential crisis. Kurosawa’s works influenced many world-class film directors (Sam Peckinpah, Sergio Leone, George Lucas, Quentin Tarantino) as well as the image of adventure movies (mainly western).
